Pan Head Machine Screws

Stainless Steel Pan Head Machine Screws with Multiple Drive Options

Pan Head Machine Screws are fully or substantially threaded fasteners for existing female threads such as tapped holes, nuts and threaded inserts. Their rounded pan head provides a broad visible bearing surface and an accessible drive recess for machinery, electrical equipment, enclosures and general industrial assembly. VALTOR supplies Phillips, slotted, combination, 6-lobe and square drive configurations according to the applicable specification or customer requirement.

Product Overview

Pan Head Machine Screws engage a pre-existing female thread in a tapped hole, hex nut, rivet nut, self clinching nut, cage nut or other threaded insert. They are machine-threaded assembly fasteners, not self tapping screws or self drilling screws, and should not be described as creating their own thread in plain sheet metal.

The pan head has a rounded upper profile, broad bearing surface and accessible recess, making it suitable for exposed industrial assemblies, equipment housings, machinery panels and serviceable covers. Head selection still depends on the actual joint and mating surface.

The same pan-head geometry can be supplied with Phillips / cross recessed, slotted, combination Phillips / slotted, 6-lobe / Torx or square drive according to assembly tooling, torque-transfer needs, automation, maintenance access, regional preference and customer drawings. VALTOR supports 304 or 316 stainless steel, suitable carbon steel, Metric / UNC / UNF threads, standard supply and feasible custom production.

Drive Options & Selection

Phillips / Cross Recessed
A familiar general-purpose installation method with broad tool availability for machinery, housings, electrical assemblies and production work. ISO 7045 / DIN 7985 applies only to appropriate standard cross-recessed versions.
Slotted Drive
A straight-slot option for legacy equipment, maintenance replacement, traditional machine designs and customer-specific drawings.
Combination Phillips / Slotted Drive
Combines a cross recess and straight slot in the same pan head, supporting more than one common tool for field maintenance and serviceable assemblies.
6-Lobe / Torx Drive
Positive tool engagement can reduce cam-out tendency compared with conventional cross recesses in suitable higher-torque, automated or repeated assembly applications.
Square Drive / Robertson-Type
Provides positive driver engagement and tool retention, selected according to customer specification, tooling, regional preference and production needs.
Selection Guide
Consider installation tool, required torque transfer, cam-out sensitivity, manual or automated assembly, maintenance access, regional preference, customer drawing and existing equipment specification. No single drive is universally best.

Material, Thread & Finish Options

1304 Stainless Steel — General industrial equipment, machinery, electrical enclosures and assemblies requiring good corrosion resistance.
2316 Stainless Steel — Improved corrosion resistance for appropriate humid, coastal, outdoor or more corrosive service.
3Carbon Steel — Available where cost, mechanical requirement, finish or customer specification makes it appropriate.
4Thread Compatibility — Metric, UNC or UNF diameter and pitch must match the nut, tapped hole or threaded insert.

Custom Drive, Size & OEM Manufacturing

Drive Customization

Phillips, slotted, combination, 6-lobe and square drive requirements should be confirmed by drawing, sample, drive specification and mating tool. Not every drive is available in every diameter.

Dimension Customization

Feasible custom parameters include thread diameter and pitch, screw and thread length, head diameter and height, drive size, and suitable special end geometry. A design differing from ISO 7045 / DIN 7985 is identified as custom.

Drawing & Sample Confirmation

Provide drawing or sample, thread, length, head dimensions, drive, material, finish, quantity, mating component and application. Samples can confirm thread fit, drive fit, dimensions and assembly performance.

Length, Alignment & Surface

Inspection may verify diameter, pitch, thread continuity and mating fit; pan-head diameter, height, profile and alignment; the actual drive geometry, depth, position, symmetry, burrs and tool engagement; overall and threaded length, straightness, material and finish condition. Documentation may include MTC, raw-material report, dimensional inspection report, product inspection report and third-party inspection support when specified. No unverified torque or certification claim is assumed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Pan Head Machine Screws and self tapping screws?

A machine screw engages a pre-existing female machine thread in a nut, tapped hole or threaded insert. A self tapping screw forms or cuts its mating thread during installation, while a self drilling screw also drills a suitable material before forming the thread.

Do all drive types comply with ISO 7045 or DIN 7985?

No. These references apply to appropriate cross-recessed standard versions. Slotted, combination, 6-lobe and square drive versions follow their applicable specification, confirmed product requirement or customer drawing.

Which drive type should I choose?

Consider available tooling, torque transfer, cam-out sensitivity, manual or automated assembly, maintenance access, regional preference and the existing equipment specification. No drive is universally best.

Can VALTOR manufacture custom Pan Head Machine Screws?

Custom drive, thread, length, head dimensions, material and finish may be supported subject to feasibility. Provide a drawing or sample and the mating component for review.

What information is required for a quotation?

Please provide drive type, thread diameter and pitch, length, head requirement, material, finish, quantity, mating component, application and any drawing, sample, packaging or inspection needs.
