Product Overview

Cage nuts, also called captive square nuts or clip-in cage nuts, combine a square female-threaded nut with a spring retaining cage. The assembly clips into a compatible square opening and provides a serviceable threaded point without welding, riveting or permanent clinching.

The captured nut can move slightly inside the cage. This limited floating action helps align a mating screw across normal panel and equipment tolerances, but it cannot correct severely misaligned holes.

VALTOR supplies cage nuts for industrial control cabinets, equipment racks, machinery housings, electrical enclosures and OEM sheet-metal assemblies according to thread, square-hole size, panel thickness, cage design, material and finish requirements.

Cage Construction, Floating Alignment & Panel Fit

Captive Square Nut Construction
A square female-threaded nut is retained inside a spring cage during handling, installation, assembly and maintenance while preserving its intended limited movement.
Spring Retaining Cage
Flexible tabs engage the prepared square panel opening, retain the complete assembly in the panel and keep the square nut captive. The cage is not a loose washer.
Floating Alignment
Limited nut movement helps compensate for small hole-position, mounting and panel-alignment tolerances and supports screw entry. Movement is controlled, not unlimited.
Square Panel Hole
Hole width, panel thickness, cage width, retaining-tab geometry and thread position must be compatible. Standard cage nuts are not installed in ordinary round holes.
Installation Principle
Prepare the specified square hole, compress or engage the cage, insert it into the opening, allow the tabs to retain it, then install the mating screw from the accessible side while the captured nut aligns within its permitted range.
Serviceability & Product Distinction
Cage nuts can normally be removed and replaced when equipment design permits. Self-clinching nuts use press-induced sheet flow, rivet nuts deform their body, and weld nuts are permanently welded.

Panel Compatibility, Material & Finish Options

1Panel Thickness & Square Hole — The cage must suit panel thickness, hole dimensions, cage size and required thread position; no universal range applies.
2Stainless Steel Options — Suitable components can be supplied for corrosion-resistant industrial applications when the actual material specification is confirmed.
3Carbon / Spring Steel Options — The square nut may use carbon or stainless steel while the cage may use suitable spring steel or stainless material; the two components are not assumed identical.
4Material Selection — Consider environment, corrosion, panel material, equipment use, spring performance and customer specification.

Quality, Installation Fit & Documentation

Thread Inspection
Square Nut Inspection
Cage Geometry Inspection
Captive Retention Check
Panel Fit Test

Inspection covers thread size, pitch and mating-screw fit; square nut geometry and thread position; cage width, height, tabs and spring condition; secure nut retention with intended floating movement; and sample panel fit, installed position and screw access. Dimensional values follow the selected product and panel specification rather than universal assumptions. Documentation may include a Material Certificate / MTC, raw material report, dimensional report, required panel-fit record or third-party support.

Provide thread, square-hole and panel dimensions, cage and component materials, finish, quantity, mating screw and equipment application.

Drawing, Sample & Custom Supply

Panel and assembly drawings or samples help verify fit. Feasible custom threads, cage dimensions, panel compatibility, material combinations and finishes are identified as custom unless they conform to a specified standard.

Sample Validation & Packaging

Samples can verify panel fit, retention, floating alignment, thread compatibility and access. Export packing may use bags, boxes, cartons, pallets or bulk formats while protecting cages, tabs, threads and surfaces.

Customer Packaging

Customer labels, part numbers, carton markings, packing quantities and authorized private-label packaging can be supported. Delivery depends on specification, quantity, validation and current production availability.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a Cage Nut stay in a sheet metal panel?

The spring retaining cage engages a correctly sized square opening and holds the threaded square nut captive while permitting limited alignment movement.

What is the difference between Cage Nuts and Rivet Nuts?

Cage nuts clip into square holes and are normally replaceable. Rivet nuts deform their insert body behind the panel to create a more permanent threaded connection.

How do I choose the correct Cage Nut for my panel?

Confirm thread, square-hole dimensions, panel thickness, cage dimensions and mating screw. An OEM panel drawing or sample is recommended.

Why is floating movement useful in a Cage Nut?

Limited movement helps compensate for small manufacturing and assembly tolerances and supports mating-screw alignment during installation and service.

Can Cage Nut samples be supplied for panel-fit testing?

Yes. Samples can be arranged to check square-hole fit, cage retention, floating alignment and thread compatibility before bulk production.
