Product Overview

These larger-diameter, long structural timber fasteners are distinct from traditional furniture Wood Screws, slender Chipboard Screws and hex-head Coach Screws. Their countersunk six-lobe head, smooth partial shank, deep coarse lower thread and cutting point support heavy wood-to-wood assembly.

The thread primarily engages the lower member while the smooth shank passes through the upper member. As the screw advances, this geometry can draw the members together. The six-lobe drive supports positive power-tool engagement, and the cutting point assists starting according to the actual product and timber condition.

Specify diameter, overall length, thread and smooth-shank lengths, head geometry, drive size, point type, 304/A2 or 316/A4 grade, timber type, member thickness, application, required testing or approval, quantity and drawing/sample.

Partial Thread, Timber Pulling Action & Length Selection

Four Product Zones
Countersunk head → smooth shank → coarse timber thread → sharp/cutting point.
Partial-Thread Action
The thread primarily engages the lower member while the smooth shank passes through the upper member, allowing tightening to draw the timber pieces together.
Upper Member
Select thread length with upper-member thickness and intended pulling action in mind; no universal formula applies.
Lower Member
Required engagement depends on screw diameter, thread geometry, timber species/grade, loading and engineered connection design.
Overall Length L
Measured from the top of the countersunk head to the point end, not from under the head.
Thread Length b
Selected separately from L; screws with the same diameter and overall length may use different thread and smooth-shank lengths.
Drive & Point
Use the correct six-lobe driver. Point geometry influences starting, fiber cutting and installation resistance but does not eliminate every pilot-hole requirement.
Pilot Hole & Seating
Consider timber density, species, diameter, length and edge distance. Seat the countersunk head without overdriving, crushing timber or damaging the recess.

304 / 316 Stainless Steel & Size Options

1304 / A2 Stainless Steel — General exterior timber, outdoor construction, timber frames, landscape timber and humid applications where compatible.
2316 / A4 Stainless Steel — Higher corrosion resistance for demanding coastal, high-humidity and corrosion-sensitive exterior timber connections.
3Diameter & Length — Approx. 5–12 mm and 50–400 mm, with main focus on 6/8/10 mm and 80–300 mm; not every combination is implied.
4Thread Configuration — Partial thread is primary; full-thread structural configurations are secondary options according to application and drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Structural Timber Screws and normal Wood Screws?

Structural Timber Screws are generally larger, longer and construction-oriented, commonly using six-lobe drives, engineered coarse threads, partial-thread geometry and specialized cutting points.

Why are many Structural Timber Screws partially threaded?

The lower thread engages the receiving timber while the smooth upper shank passes through the upper member, helping draw the members together when thread length matches the joint.

Do Stainless Steel Structural Timber Screws require pilot holes?

It depends on diameter, length, timber density/species, edge/end distance and product design. Pre-drilling is especially important to consider in dense hardwood, long or large screws and near timber edges.

Should I choose 304 or 316 Stainless Steel Timber Screws?

304/A2 is widely used for general corrosion-resistant timber construction; 316/A4 offers increased resistance for more demanding exterior, humid and coastal environments. Timber treatment must also be considered.

What information is required for a Structural Timber Screw quotation?

Provide diameter, overall/thread lengths, stainless grade, head, drive, point, timber type, upper-member thickness, connection application, quantity and any testing, approval, drawing or project requirement.

Need Stainless Steel Structural Timber Screws?
