Stainless Steel Serrated Lock Washers

Internal & External Serrated Washers for Industrial Fastening Applications

Stainless Steel Serrated Lock Washers use multiple inclined serrations to create localized contact beneath a bolt head, screw head or nut. VALTOR supplies external Form A and internal Form J in 304/A2 and 316/A4 stainless steel to traditional DIN 6798 dimensions and customer specifications.

Product Overview

These single-piece spring-metal washers use many inclined, twisted serrations around the perimeter. Tightening brings the serrated edges into localized contact with the fastener bearing face and mating surface, which may increase resistance to relative rotation in a suitable joint.

Form A places serrations around the outside diameter for a larger visible contact diameter. Form J concentrates serrations around the inside diameter where a compact outside profile or confined bearing area is required. Neither form is universally stronger; selection depends on head diameter, available space, bearing surface and joint design.

For purchasing, specify nominal fastener size, Form A or J, d1, d2, thickness s, serration geometry, material, surface requirement, quantity and drawing or sample. Performance depends on clamp load, mating-surface hardness, coating and actual installation conditions.

External vs Internal Serrations & Joint Selection

Form A — External
Fine inclined teeth extend around the outside perimeter, providing a larger effective serrated contact diameter.
Form J — Internal
Teeth concentrate around the inside diameter while the outer rim remains compact.
Contact / Head Size
Select form using bolt-head or nut bearing diameter, available space and intended contact position.
Surface Hardness
Suitable surface interaction is needed; teeth can indent soft, painted, decorative or finished panels.
Coating & Clamping
Paint, plating, clamp load and joint stiffness affect contact behavior; the washer works only within the complete joint.
DIN 6798 vs DIN 6797
DIN 6798 refers to serrated lock washers; DIN 6797 refers to toothed lock washers. Their tooth geometries are not interchangeable.
Electrical Contact
Serrations may break surface films, but certified grounding or bonding requires validation of the complete assembly.

304 / 316 Stainless Steel & Size Options

1304 / A2 — General industrial and corrosion-resistant equipment.
2316 / A4 — Outdoor, humid, coastal and more corrosion-sensitive assemblies.
3Metric Selection — M3–M20 commercial range; main sizes M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, M12 and M16.
4Forms — Form A external and Form J internal; actual size availability may differ by form.

Choose material and form according to corrosion exposure, fastener material, mating-surface condition and available bearing space. Stainless steel does not automatically provide better locking performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Serrated Lock Washer?

It is a thin spring-metal washer with multiple angled serrations that create localized contact with mating surfaces when clamped.

What is the difference between external and internal Serrated Lock Washers?

Form A places serrations around the outside diameter; Form J concentrates them around the inside diameter for a compact outer profile.

What is the difference between DIN 6798 and DIN 6797?

DIN 6798 refers to serrated lock washers and DIN 6797 to toothed lock washers. Both are historical withdrawn DIN references, but their tooth geometry differs.

Do Serrated Lock Washers guarantee vibration resistance?

No. Actual behavior depends on clamp load, surface hardness, material, coating, joint stiffness, vibration and installation.

Can VALTOR supply 304 and 316 Stainless Steel Serrated Washers?

Yes. VALTOR supplies 304/A2 and 316/A4 Form A and Form J washers plus drawing-based custom dimensions.

Need Stainless Steel Serrated Lock Washers?
