Product Overview

Self clinching nuts are pressed into prepared holes in thin sheet metal to create strong permanent threaded connection points without welding.

The round body includes a shallow pilot and anti-rotation clinching ring that displaces and locks into the surrounding sheet material during pressing.

VALTOR supplies 304 and 316 stainless steel self clinching nuts for OEM hardware, equipment panels and fabricated metal assemblies. Carbon steel and customized dimensions can also be supplied according to drawings or samples.

Clinching Installation & Sheet Metal Retention

Round self-clinching nuts are internally threaded fasteners permanently installed in prepared sheet-metal holes by controlled pressing, material displacement and mechanical interlock.

Self-Clinching Construction
Typical geometry includes a round or cylindrical body, internal female thread, clinching or knurled retention section and displacement or locking features around the installation area. It is not an ordinary round nut.
Clinching Installation Principle
A correctly sized hole is prepared; the nut is positioned; controlled press force is applied; sheet material flows into the retaining geometry; the nut becomes permanently captured; and a reusable female thread remains for later assembly.
Sheet Material Flow
Retention depends on controlled displacement of the panel material. Compatibility depends on panel material and hardness, sheet thickness, hole diameter, installation force and nut geometry; one design does not suit every sheet material.
Anti-Rotation & Push-Out Resistance
Clinching or knurled features help resist rotation, while mechanically interlocked sheet material retains the nut against axial movement. Performance values must come from the specific validated product and assembly.
Permanent Captive Thread
The installed nut provides a captive female thread where rear access later becomes limited, repeated screw installation is required, welding is undesirable or a permanent threaded point is needed.
Installation Method Distinction
Self-clinching nuts use pressing and sheet displacement. Rivet nuts deform their own body, usually from one side; weld nuts are welded; cage nuts clip into openings and remain removable or replaceable.

Material, Panel & Finish Selection

Fastener material and clinching geometry must be selected together with the panel material, hardness, thickness, mounting hole and service environment.

1Stainless Steel Options — 304 and 316 may be supplied for suitable corrosion-resistant sheet-metal applications, subject to panel and installation compatibility.
2Carbon Steel Options — Available for general industrial sheet-metal assemblies requiring suitable mechanical properties and surface protection.
3Nut Material vs Panel Material — Selection must consider sheet material, hardness, thickness and installation method; no universal hardness rule applies to every series.
4Panel Thickness — The selected retention geometry must suit the intended sheet thickness; there is no universal minimum or maximum for all products.
5Mounting Hole — Hole size and preparation affect fit, material flow, retention and final thread position. Unverified hole diameters are not assumed.
6Corrosion & Galvanic Consideration — When nut and panel materials differ, their compatibility and the service environment should be assessed.

Installation Quality & Inspection

Inspection covers mating-thread quality, clinching geometry, dimensions, sample installation where required, installed condition, material and finish.

Thread Inspection
Clinching Geometry Inspection
Dimensional Inspection
Installation Fit Test
Installed Nut Inspection

Checks include thread size, pitch, quality and mating fit; correct knurl or retention formation, burrs and defects; body diameter, height, clinching geometry and mounting-hole compatibility. OEM sample installation can confirm panel material, thickness, hole size, equipment and assembly. Installed condition may be reviewed for seating, panel contact and distortion, thread alignment, rotation resistance and axial retention using actual customer requirements—without invented universal torque-out or push-out limits. Material, finish, thread cleanliness and visible defects are also inspected. Available documents may include a Material Certificate / MTC, raw material report, dimensional report, sample installation inspection or third-party support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are self clinching nuts used for?

Self clinching nuts are used to create permanent threaded connection points in sheet metal components, equipment panels and OEM assemblies.

What is the difference between self clinching nuts and weld nuts?

Self clinching nuts are installed by pressing into sheet metal, while weld nuts are attached through welding. The suitable choice depends on assembly design and manufacturing process.

Which materials are available for self clinching nuts?

Common options include stainless steel and carbon steel. Material selection depends on corrosion requirements, strength needs and application environment.

Can self clinching nuts be manufactured according to drawings or samples?

Yes. VALTOR supports OEM production according to customer drawings, samples and technical requirements.

How are OEM hardware components packaged for export shipment?

OEM fasteners can be packed in bags, cartons, boxes or customized export packaging according to product type and customer requirements.
