Product Overview

Square nuts are internally threaded fasteners with a square outer profile with welding projections. They are commonly used in machinery, sheet metal fabrication and industrial assemblies where the connection design benefits from a square profile, increased surface contact or anti-rotation support from a retaining pocket.

Compared with six-sided hex nuts, square nuts provide a distinct wrenching and contact geometry. Selection depends on installation space, tool access and the way the nut is retained in the assembly.

VALTOR supplies DIN 928 square nuts in 304 and 316 stainless steel for corrosion-resistant applications. Carbon steel and alternative finishes such as zinc plated or black oxide can be supplied according to requirement, while stainless versions are available natural or passivated.

Projection Welding Structure & Sheet Metal Integration

DIN 928 square weld nuts combine a square external body, internal female thread and formed underside projections for permanent attachment to suitable sheet metal by projection welding.

DIN 928 Square Body Design
The square body supports stable positioning during welding and distinguishes DIN 928 from ordinary round or hexagonal weld nut designs.
Welding Projections
Formed underside projections concentrate electrical current and pressure, then heat and collapse during the welding cycle to create localized weld points between the nut and sheet.
Projection Welding Principle
The nut is positioned against the prepared panel; its projections contact the surface; current and electrode pressure are applied; the projections heat and collapse; localized weld zones form and permanently attach the nut. This is not a press-in, riveted, clip-in or self-clinching installation.
Permanent Threaded Connection
After welding, the nut provides a fixed female-threaded point so a bolt or screw can be installed later from the accessible side of the fabricated assembly.
Weld Projection Geometry
Projection geometry affects initial electrical contact, welding consistency, positioning and final attachment quality. No universal projection dimensions or welding parameters apply to every assembly.
Base Material Compatibility
Weldability depends on nut material, sheet material and thickness, surface condition, coating, equipment and procedure. Each combination requires appropriate process validation.

Material, Weldability & Finish Options

Nut material, sheet material, surface condition and fabrication sequence should be selected together for reliable projection welding and corrosion protection.

1Carbon Steel — Commonly used for projection weld nuts in welded sheet-metal assemblies, with selection based on mechanical performance, sheet material, process, corrosion environment and treatment.
2Stainless Steel — 304 and 316 versions may be supplied for suitable stainless or corrosion-resistant fabrication, subject to the welding procedure and mating-sheet compatibility.
3Material Matching — Consider weldability, galvanic compatibility, corrosion environment, required joint performance and the project specification.
4Surface Condition Before Welding — Contamination, heavy coatings and unsuitable finishes can affect contact and weld consistency; plated or coated parts do not necessarily use identical settings.

A finish applied before welding can affect the process. Where coating or post-weld corrosion protection is required, the sequence must follow the actual fabrication specification.

Weld Quality, Inspection & Documentation

Inspection covers the mating thread, projection formation, dimensions, sample fit where required, material and surface condition.

Material & Surface Inspection

Thread checks cover diameter, pitch, quality and mating fit. Projections are inspected for formation, height or profile consistency, missing features, deformation, burrs and visible defects. Dimensional inspection may include thread size, square-body dimensions, height, projection location and geometry, and overall profile. OEM trials can verify fit with the specified sheet, hole or locating feature, panel thickness and welding process. Any welded-assembly testing follows an agreed customer or project method—without invented pull-out, push-out, torque-out, current, time or pressure values. Available documentation may include a Material Certificate / MTC, raw material report, dimensional report, sample inspection report or third-party support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are square nuts used for?

Square nuts are used in machinery, sheet metal fabrication and industrial fastening assemblies where a square outer profile is preferred for the connection design.

What is the difference between square nuts and hex nuts?

Square nuts have a square outer profile with welding projections, while hex nuts have a six-sided outer shape. The selection depends on installation requirements, tool access and assembly design.

When should I choose stainless steel square nuts?

Stainless steel square nuts are commonly selected for applications requiring corrosion resistance, cleaner surface appearance or outdoor/environmental durability.

Can square nuts be supplied in custom sizes and packaging?

Yes. VALTOR can supply square nuts according to size requirements, packaging preferences and other project specifications.

How are square nuts packaged for export shipment?

Square nuts can be packed in bags, cartons, boxes or customized export packaging according to quantity and customer requirements.
